El paisaje del territorio valenciano durante el período romano y visigodo se puede conocer gracias a los análisis arqueobotánicos y arqueozoológicos de una serie de restos de carácter biótico.
La evolución de la vegetación en las comarcas valencianas durante este período romano y visigodo, va en el sentido de una degradación de las formaciones boscosas como son los carrascales termófilos, incluidos en la orden de la Quercetalia ilicis, y el establecimiento de comunidades de garriga
tipo coscojares y lentiscares (Querco-Lentiscetum) y tomillares y romerales (Rosmarino-Erición ). Junto
a los ríos y ramblas, había una vegetación de ribera como la asociación Populetalia albae, con álamos,
chopos, fresnos y sauces. En las zonas de umbrías de las montañas o en las comarcas interiores se
desarrollaba una vegetación mesomediterránea caracterizada por el Quercetum rotundifoliae, con algunas formaciones supramediterráneas como el Quercion valentinae.
Los pinos habitaban de forma natural en las etapas de degradación de los carrascales, como sucede con el pino carrasco (Pinus halepensis), y de los alcornocales como sucede con el pino rodeno
(Pinus pinaster).
Además, encontramos una serie de taxones que bien podrían pertenecer a la variedad cultivada,
tales como Olea europaea (olivo), Vitis (vid) y algunas rosáceas. Hay que destacar la presencia de Ceratonia siliqua (algarrobo) en época romana desde el período republicano.
En todo momento se han explotado biotopos diferentes, como la ripisilva, montañas y llanuras,
siendo durante el período bajo-imperial y visigodo cuando se puede observar el máximo de degradación de esta vegetación. Dicha degradación está en relación con la acción antrópica (expansión demográfica, prácticas económicas) y el grado de respuesta de los suelos ante esta acción. Los suelos
estaban ya bastante erosionados y el clima, semejante al actual, tampoco favoreció la regeneración
del bosque ante la presión antrópica.
Estos biotopos (bosques, matorrales, marjales, etc.), permitían disponer de una gran variedad de
recursos como:
– madera, que se podía emplear tanto como combustible (en hogares de tipo doméstico o en hornos para diversas de actividades) como para material de construcción (hábitats, ingeniería naval, carruajes, muebles, instrumentos...).
– frutos y otros elementos vegetales (fibras, resinas...).
– caza de animales característicos de los distintos biotopos (suidos, aves...).
– pesca, tanto de especies de aguas marinas costeras, salobres y de agua dulce.
– moluscos marinos y terrestres...

Las comunidades vegetales valencianas sufrieron, durante el período romano y visigodo,
una degradación de las formaciones boscosas estableciéndose comunidades de garriga tipo
coscojares, lentiscares, tomillares y romerales. Los pinos habitaban en las etapas de degradación de los carrascales y de los alcornocales.
En este paisaje también se puede detectar la presencia de campos de cultivo como indican los restos de cereales, leguminosas y
frutales junto con especies de malas hierbas. Esta economía agrícola se completa con recursos ganaderos de especies de ovicaprinos, bovinos y suidos.
En época romana, la explotación de los recursos naturales está
en función del grado de romanización que haya alcanzado la
zona. Así existían territorios claramente romanizados con un poblamiento de llanura y con un espacio agrícola dedicado al cultivo
de la viña, el olivo y los cereales (ager) que estaba relacionado con
el hábito alimenticio de consumir pan, vino y aceite. Por otro
lado, existían otras zonas, con una superficie forestal explotada
mucho más extensa, que poseían un uso del espacio dedicado
principalmente a la ganadería y una alimentación fundamentalmente proteínica, basada en los productos de la ganadería, de la
caza y la recolección (saltus).
El ager valenciano contaría con una explotación intensa de los
suelos aluviales por medio de una agricultura de irrigación, que
ya había comenzado en época ibérica y que en época romana al-

canza un gran desarrollo favorecida entre otras causas
por la construcción de acueductos y otros sistemas de
canalización de las aguas de riego. Los datos geomorfológicos indican que, además, existían en época romana
una serie de marjales paralelas al litoral.
Las zonas que habían sido ganadas al bosque eran
aprovechadas para el cultivo de los cereales, la viña, el
olivo, frutales y hortalizas. De todos ellos tenemos conocimiento tanto por los restos carpológicos que han
quedado en los sedimentos como por las noticias de los
autores clásicos.
Otros datos indicativos de la presencia de la vid y del
olivo son las ánforas que contenían vino y aceite, los recipientes relacionados con su consumo, los hallazgos de
madera de vid o de olivo, de pepitas de uva o huesos de
aceituna y la existencia de estructuras relacionadas con la
elaboración del vino y el aceite (lagares y almazaras).
La viña y, posiblemente, el olivo se cultivan desde los
siglos VIII-VII a.C. en asentamientos vinculados con la colonización fenicia, como l’Alt de Benimaquia (Denia,
Alacant) y la Rábita (Guardamar del Segura, Alacant). En
el siglo VI a.C., aparecen restos de vid en el yacimiento
ibérico de Los Villares, confirmándose, a partir de este
momento, su presencia de manera sistemática en la totalidad de los asentamientos valencianos. A partir del siglo
V a.C., además de restos de vid y de olivo, encontramos
restos de higuera, almendro, granado y, posiblemente,
manzano. Entre los frutales, la vid es la especie más representada, seguida del olivo y de la higuera. Estos tres
cultivos constituyen la base sobre la que se asienta la arboricultura en el Mediterráneo.
Muy pocas son las fuentes que hacen referencia al
cultivo de la viña en Hispania durante la época republicana y cuando lo hacen son poco explícitas, como es el
caso de Varrón (Res. Rust., 1, 8, 1) que señala entre los
tipos de viña las de Hispania. Si a esto añadimos la escasez de datos arqueobotánicos sobre la vid para este
período, parece indicar que la extensión y explotación
de este cultivo era aún limitada. En cambio, para la
época alto-imperial, las fuentes escritas y arqueológicas

vid se cultivó desde época
republicana y fué durante el
Imperio cuando su producción, destinada al comercio,

Aunque los iberos ya cultivaron el
olivo, fue durante el período romano cuando el aceite, utilizado
para diversos fines, se convirtió en
uno de los pilares de la economía
de la Hispania romana. Los latifundios de olivos ocuparon grandes
extensiones de territorio agrícola.
demuestran que la viña constituía la base agrícola fundamental de muchas de las explotaciones rurales de la Península. El vino hispánico era exportado en grandes cantidades según los testimonios
de Estrabón, Columela, etc. Algunos autores indican que los vinos hispánicos no eran muy apreciados por los romanos, tal es el caso del vino de Saguntum según Juvenal. Pero otros comentan, sin
embargo, que son muy estimados; así los vinos de Lauro elogiados por Plinio, los de Tarraco por Marcial y los de Saguntum por Frontón. Además, las fuentes escritas y arqueológicas muestran que la exportación de vino hispánico no sufrió ninguna interrupción con motivo del edicto de Domiciano que
ordenaba, en el año 92, arrancar la mitad de las cepas plantadas en las provincias.
Para el período bajo-imperial no existen, tampoco, muchas referencias de fuentes literarias sobre
la viña. Parece ser que el cultivo estaba más restringido en Hispania, dejándose de producir para el
mercado exterior. En Valentia hemos podido observar un descenso de los porcentajes de Vitis entre
los restos antracológicos de este período.

En cuanto al olivo, los romanos encontraron el terreno preparado para extender su cultivo por la Península Ibérica gracias a las experiencias llevadas a cabo con esta planta por los íberos. Buena parte de la
economía de la Hispania romana se basaba en el cultivo del olivo y en la producción de aceite. La exportación de aceite a Roma se hizo desde tiempos muy tempranos, siendo el territorio de Saguntum uno de
los que primeramente exportaron dicho producto.
Los frutales son también señalados entre los cultivos por los autores clásicos. Hemos podido testimoniar la presencia en tierras valencianas de higueras, algarrobos, perales, ciruelos y otros frutales de
la familia de las rosáceas. Entre las referencias de las fuentes literarias podemos destacar las de Plinio
en su obra Naturalis Historia sobre los higos (eran famosos los sacontini o de Sagunto), el peral, el manzano, el ciruelo, el melocotonero, y los injertos de ciruelo en manzano dando la malina y de ciruelo en
almendro dando la amygdalina.
El desarrollo de otras especies como el nogal (Juglans regia) parece también ligado a la romanización, ya que lo encontramos en los diagramas polínicos de Casablanca y Almenara (Castellón) del
período romano.
También existía una parte del territorio destinada a bosques en las tierras comunales de los municipios y colonias. Entre las actividades y oficios relacionados tradicionalmente con el bosque, la obtención de madera y su transporte fueron las más importantes. De la madera explotada como combustible se aprovechaban toda clase de especies y ramas de todos los calibres. Los árboles con
troncos más gruesos como los del Quercus, Cupressus, Ulmus,y Populus, son recomendados por Vitrubio para la construcción de viviendas, pero de hecho se emplearon también otros taxones como Juniperus en el caso del templo de Diana de Saguntum y los pinos carrascos y fresnos en las construcciones de Valentia.
La madera sirvió, asímismo, para la construcción naval, y dada la importancia de este medio de
transporte en el período romano, se utilizaron grandes cantidades de madera para la fabricación
tanto de navíos comerciales como de guerra.
Además, la madera fue empleada como combustible en todo tipo de hornos. Hemos documentado restos de fresno, olivo, pino carrasco y lentisco en un horno para fabricar vidrio en Valentia, y
aunque los tipos de hornos estudiados para el período romano son escasos observamos que no
existe una regla general a la hora de utilizar una u otra especie como combustible.
Los troncos más gruesos procedían de las montañas interiores y serían transportados por vía fluvial hasta las zonas llanas, como señala Estrabón para la antigüedad o como se ha venido haciendo a
lo largo de la historia por los madereros o raiers de los ríos Júcar y Turia.
Los bosques proporcionaban otros productos además de la madera, tales como la resina de los
pinos de la que se extraía la pez para impermeabilizar las ánforas, el corcho, algunos frutos e, indirectamente, la miel. Los Quercus producen además de la madera, corcho y bellotas, otros productos
como sucede con las coscojas que dan el cusculium, quermes vegetal usado para teñir los mantos
imperiales.
De la limpieza de los bosques, efectuada tradicionalmente, se obtiene también toda clase de pequeño ramaje para consumo doméstico de los hogares y hornos (de pan, yeso, cal, vidrio, etc.), y
para el forraje del ganado como es el caso de algunas leguminosas recomendadas por varios autores
latinos, tales como los Cytisus.
Hay que señalar la importancia de la explotación de la ripisilva. Algunos sauces se han cultivado
para obtener mimbre de sus ramas más jóvenes. Las plantaciones de sauces, según Catón, figuran
como las terceras por su rentabilidad siguiendo a las de viñas y a los huertos de regadío, y por de-

lante de las de olivos. Algunos instrumentos se realizaban empleando estas maderas como el caso
del uso del fresno en el enmangue de algunas de las armas halladas en los niveles de destrucción de
Valentia en el 75 a.C., relacionados con las guerras sertorianas.
Otras especies de la ripisilva eran empleadas en la construcción de las techumbres de las viviendas como es el caso de la utilización de cañas (Arundo donax) en techos y paredes recomendada por
Vitrubio y atestiguada por el antracoanálisis de Valentia y en otros contextos arqueológicos. Según
Vitrubio, árboles que se pueden encontrar entre las especies de ribera, como los olmos y los chopos,
son idóneos para edificar.
Finalmente, los romanos también explotaron el esparto, siendo muy importante la zona destinada a dicha planta en Carthago Nova, conocida como campus spartarius. Ésta, sin duda, también se
cultivaría en otras zonas termomediterráneas de la Península aunque en menores cantidades. También fue importante el cultivo y la producción de lino, y según Plinio, los tejidos de este material de
eran los más famosos del mediterráneo.

De la limpieza de los bosques, efectuada tradicionalmente, se obtiene también toda clase de pequeño ramaje para consumo doméstico de los hogares y hornos (de pan, yeso, cal, vidrio, etc.), y
para el forraje del ganado como es el caso de algunas leguminosas recomendadas por varios autores
latinos, tales como los Cytisus.
Hay que señalar la importancia de la explotación de la ripisilva. Algunos sauces se han cultivado
para obtener mimbre de sus ramas más jóvenes. Las plantaciones de sauces, según Catón, figuran
como las terceras por su rentabilidad siguiendo a las de viñas y a los huertos de regadío, y por de-

lante de las de olivos. Algunos instrumentos se realizaban empleando estas maderas como el caso
del uso del fresno en el enmangue de algunas de las armas halladas en los niveles de destrucción de
Valentia en el 75 a.C., relacionados con las guerras sertorianas.
Otras especies de la ripisilva eran empleadas en la construcción de las techumbres de las viviendas como es el caso de la utilización de cañas (Arundo donax) en techos y paredes recomendada por
Vitrubio y atestiguada por el antracoanálisis de Valentia y en otros contextos arqueológicos. Según
Vitrubio, árboles que se pueden encontrar entre las especies de ribera, como los olmos y los chopos,
son idóneos para edificar.
Finalmente, los romanos también explotaron el esparto, siendo muy importante la zona destinada a dicha planta en Carthago Nova, conocida como campus spartarius. Ésta, sin duda, también se
cultivaría en otras zonas termomediterráneas de la Península aunque en menores cantidades. También fue importante el cultivo y la producción de lino, y según Plinio, los tejidos de este material de
