Model of Iberian pottery kiln.
Tarima horno
Kilns of this type, introduced in the Valencian coast since the Early Iron Age, enabled making larger-scale vessels compared to previous periods and improved the quality of the finished product.
These are dual-chamber furnaces with a vertical-draw camera. Vegetal-based fuel is introduced in the lower chamber while ceramics are placed on a grill in an upper chamber. This allows the circulation of hot air through a vertical draw at the top of the kilns’ dome. In order to obtain the characteristic Iberian pottery productions the control of firing temperatures, as well as the entrance and exit of air is very important.
