NUEVA PIEZA DE ARTE MOBILIAR
PARPALLENSE
El Arte del Parpalló o ARTE PARPALLENSE es lo suficientemente
conocido a escala mundial, así como el papel fundamental que ha representado en el mejor conocimiento y estructuración del arte paleolítico europeo, para que una nueva obra venga a tener especial signíficación o pueda introducir modificaciones esenciales o siquiera de matiz en los esquemas artísticos y evolutivos establecidos. Sin embargo,
la descubierta adquiere singular significación por la naturaleza del
soporte sobre el que se encuentra, de ahí que juzguemos oportuno dedicarle primordial atención, lo que motiva el presente trabajo.
CARACTERISTICAS Y HALLAZGO
El soporte de la nueva obra conocida de arte mueble procedente
del Parpalló (fig. 1), es una gran caña de hueso largo, posiblemente de
caballo, de 19 cm. de longitud, 3.5 cm. de anchura máxima y 1.8 cm.
de espesor en la parte proximal de la apófisis; presentando buena
conservación y gran solidez por intensa mineralización; con pátina
marrón oscura.
Se halló a una profundidad entre 4 y 4.50 m. (fig. 2), siendo recogido, pues, entre los días 4 y 6 de junio de 1930, cuando 1~ dirección
de los trabl:tios de excavación que realizaba el S.I.P. de la Diputación
de Valencia en la cueva ·gandiense era compartida yor Luis Pericot,
Mariano Jornet y Gonzalo Viñes.
A causa de que se trata de un gran fragmento de hueso largo, sin
preparación aparente a pesar de que se observa cierto pulido de algunas aristas, pasó desapercibido a los excavadores confundido con los

otros restos de fauna, entre otras razones por la capa de .Qarro y tierra
que lo debía cubrir, enmascarando, por lo tanto, las incisiones.
Precisamente la capa donde apareció; especialmente «la parte occidental, estaba lleria de los restos óseos de los animales consumidos,
formando un inmenso osario»,· según nos relata Pericot (1), y como un
hueso más fue recogido y guardado en los almacenes del S.I.P:, donde
permanecía junto a otros muchos huelfos dentro de un gran cajón de
madera.
En 1972, el Dr. I. Davidson, arqueólogo-paleontólogo inglés, estudiaba la fauna del Parpalló y al examinar la del cajóri en cuestión
acertó a distinguir las incisiones figuradas, entregando la pieza a la
dirección del S.I.P., que de inmediato valoró su extraordinaria importancia, quedando expuesta en las vitrinas de su Museo, dándose noticia gráfica en el libro «Museo de Prehistoria... » (Valencia, 1974, ·
pág. 53.)
LAS FIGURACIONQS
La parte externa del hueso, sensiblemente incurvada, contiene
dos figuras enfr~ntadas (fig. 3 y láminas I a IV), la de la izquierda corresponde a un caballo y la de la derecha a un cérvido.
Ambas se han ejecutado mediante la técnica de la incisión, aplicada de dos maneras diferentes, parte de la crinera, oreja, cara, boca,
barba y belfos del caballo, así como de la cabeza y cuello del cérvido
se han ejecutado con incisión simple profunda de sección en uve; el
resto, en ambas figuras, por el contrario, se ha ejecutado mediante incisión muy somera, aunque ancha en relación con su poca profundidad, observándose wi doble surco paralelo que podría confundirse
con el «trazo repe'tido» descrito por Barandiarán (2), pero, al parecer,
se trata más bien de la doble huella de los extremos de la arista del
buril empleado, según nuestro criterio.
EL CABAL.l.O
El caballo, que mira a la derecha, se grabó con trazo firme y suave, figurándose únicamente la cabeza,' cuello, crinera, cruz, parte del
dorso, pecho y parte del vientre, no representándose, por lo tanto, ni

la mitad trasera del mismo ni las extremidades (fig. 3 y láminas I a
ill). La crinera destaca perfectamente, cayendo abruptamente sobre
la frente (lám. ill), estando formada por dos lineas paralelas rellenas
de trazos oblicuos que sobrepasan su límite superior, lo que generalmente es interpretado como signo de hirsutismo (3). Solamente se representa una de las ·orejas mediante linea oblicua simple, pudiendo
confundirse la otra con la linea terminal de la crinera paralela a la
anterior.
La frente y la cara del mismo caball~ son sensiblemente convexas; el ojo se ha representado mediante una incisión corta oblicua,
cortada por otr~ transversal, quedando en el cruce una pequeña
oquedad; el hocico sufrió rectificación, acortándolo, lo que·parece ser
debido a que se alargó y levantó excesivamente el extremo del mismo,
lo que obligó a borrar, raspándolo, el ollar o narices iniciales, nítidamente representadas en el nuevo trazado. Por el contrario, la boca,
los belfos, la barba y el barboquejo no aparecen entre la confusión de
líneas, algunas de las cuales, por su oblicuidad, parecen querer representar, más bien, los pelos de la barba, y otra horizontal no guarda
posición en relación con las otras.
Sin emb~go, las fauces si quedan bien representadas, continuándose la figura a partir de aqui por el cuello, pecho y, quizá, parte del
vientre, donde ya acaba, siendo, en este último tramo descrito donde
una serie de numerosas incisiones cortas oblicuas rellenan toda la mitad inferior del cuello, pudiendo representar el abundante pelo que
poseen en esta parte determinadas especies (faballares, o bien ser un
recurso artístico en relación con el llamado claroscuro, utilizado para
dar relieve y volumen a la figura, inclinándonos nosotros por la primera opción. De las extremidades y de la parte trasera no hay ningún
detalle.
En general el caballo se representa de forma alargada en el sentido del soporte, y las partes señaladas son exactamente las que el autor debió querer plasmar, según la tendencia indicada por Pericot en
Parpalló: «Rarísima vez el animal aparece entero, a no ser en dibujos
de pequeño tamalio. En la mayoría de los casos vemos sólo la parte de
cabeza y cuello del caballo» (4). En la postura representada se podrla
intentar ver al caballo en actitud de salto, o bien en la posición tensa
que adoptan post-mortero, lo cual, sin dejar de ser viable, es excesiva·
mente subjetivo.

Se encuentra atravesado por numerosas lineas incisas oblicuas,
de incisión ancha y poco profunda, que nada tienen que ver con el tema de los trazos pareados (5) (tampoco las numerosas incisiones señaladas en el vientre), sin que hayamos encontrado claros elementos
comparativos en otras representaciones lineales (6); en todo caso no
están dispuestas al azar, una de ellas cruza la cara por la parte más
convexa de la misma y modela las fauces, la siguiente arranca del
niismo ojo"' otra, a continuación, parece iniciarse en la base d& la oreja
separada de la crinera; otras lineas incisas interiores parecen querer
representar detalles del caballo o ser intentos fallidos del dibujo.
Es imposible calcular la superficie o realizar el diagrama zoométrico de esta figura caballar, tal y como propone Madariaga (7), ya
que lo único que podemos calcular es la longitud de la cabeza, 20
mm.; anchura corporal, una cabeza y dos partes y media; longitud del
cuello, 1 cabeza y dos partes y media; anchura del cuello, 7 partes y
media, y ello con reservas dada la deformación de la figura. Aparte
del cuello corto, lo más destacable es la convexidad de la cara y el hirsutismo de la crinera, que resalta notablemente.
Si atendemos a la convexidad del perfil de la cara, detalle significativo, estudiado especialmente por Ruy d' Andrade desde otro .ángulo
(8), y tenemos en cuenta el Trígamo Signaléptico de Baron, reproducido por Madariaga (9), nos encontraríamos ante un caballo longilineo e
hipermétrico; convexidad que, también según Madariaga (10), secorresponde con caras alargadas, nuca estrecha, ojos oblicuos y pequeños, ort-jas juntas, cuello convexo, cruz elevada, dorso y región del ri-

ñón convexos, grupa inclinada y cola de inserción beja metida entre
los isquiones. En cuyo caso se trataría de su Morfotipo IV de la clasificación de los caballos de la Re~ón Cantábrica, con hábita~ en valles y
regiones costeras, ricas en pastos.
No es nuestro propósito, ni mucho menos, determinar la raza del
caballo aqui representado, lo que consideramos ciertamente imposible, aunque se han realizado intentos (11) ampliamente criticQdos
(12), afirmándose, incluso, runa no muy compleja diferenciación dentro de la especie caballar» (13); pero, siend·o la clasificación binaria,
Tarpán o Przewalsky, la más aceptada actualmente, seria interesante
poder definir la pertenencia de nuestro caballo a cualquiera de ambas.
La crinera enhiesta es rasgo propio del Morfotipo ir de Madariaga, lo cual abogaría por el Przewalsky, aunque entonces se trataría de
un caballo mediollneo que no encejarfa con su perfil convexo según lo
expuesto. Lión Valderrábano señala, no obstante, una población de
caballos brevillneos en el Solutrense, y en el Magdaleniense Inicial
Longillneos (14), es decir runa población caballar de tipo tarpánico en
Gravetiense-Solutrense Inicial, sobre la cual parece extenderse una
muy numerosá capa de caballos de tipo oriental, dolicocéfalos y de
formas más alargadas, eñ algún momento del interestadio de Lasca\ID (15), este último necesariamente tendría que ser el Frzewalsky, que
es por el que nos inclinamos nosotros.
CBRVIDO
Enfrentada al caballo y por lo tanto en la parte derecha, junto a la
apófisis, se encuentra una diminuta figura, tanto que pasó desapercibida en los primeros momentos, no ya sólo por su peque:Jiez y lo ténue
de su grabado, sino también por el estilo esquemático e incluso torpe
de algunos de sus trazos (fig. 3 y lám. IV), de tal manera que llegamos
a dudar sobre si se trataba de un clprido o un cérvido, inclinándonos
por lo últim!J al examinar con detalle el morro y la cornamenta, ya
que figuras similares del Parpalló (16) se han considerado así.

Pai'a su representación se hizo uso de dos microfiSuras naturales
situadas pró¡dmas y convergentes, aprovechándose para figurar la
nuca, cara, p.a rte del.morro y ·la mandíbula, completándose el resto
mediante incisión .simple de sección en uve, o ancha y somera, delimitándose asi el fino morro y el cuello que dobla violentamente y se
al~ga con exageración; sobre la nuca dos lineas rectas incisas divergentes representan las orejas, por lo que hay que considerarla como
una cierva. Ningún otro detalle anatómico hemos podido distinguir,
puesto que lo descritq es todo lo representado.
También, como el caballo, se encuentra atravesado por lineas incisas -en aparente desorden, una de ellas arranca desde la oreja izquierda, corta el morro de .la misma y se pierde debfijo del hocico del
caballo; otras dos incisiones convergentes oblicuas descienden paralelas al cuerno ~erecho para juntarse en el inicio de la parte inferior
· del cuello, alli se cruzan y siguen dirección divergente, uniéndose la
izquierda con la linea oblicua que cruzaba el morro, siguiendo, esta
última, el recorrido de una vieja fisura.
Por último, queremos señalar que entre el morro de la cabra y la
cabeza del caballo hay una serie de numerosas y cortas incisiones en
anárquica disposición al parecer, de imposible interpretación.
POSICION ESTRATIGRAFICA Y CRONOLOGICA
Ya hemos indicado como el hueso grabado se encontró entre 4 y
4.50 m. de profundidad, bien en la capa 16 (4-4.25 m.), bien en la 17
(4.25-4.50 m.), en el nivel que Pericot denominó primeramente
Solútreo-Auriñaciense final, cuando el «apogeo de la técnica solutrense decaía después de los 4.75 m., empezando entonces el apogeo de la
punta de muesca de tradición auriñaciense. El predominio de ésta se
hace más evidente a partir de los 4.5 metros», según explica el mismo
Pericot (17); sin embargo, añade en la misma página: «Pero estamos en
un mmnento de transición entre dos culttn'as de caracteres radicalmente
opuestos, y por ello, faltando capas estériles, forzosamente ha de producirse alguna confusión y entrecruce. Especialmente en ·la capa de 4
a 4.25· metros aparecen piezas que corresponden al nivel superior,
· que hacemos empezar alrededor de los cuatro metros, de la misma
manera que de los 3.75 a los 4 metros nos encontraremos c.o n piezas,
puntas de muesca, por ejemplo, que deben colocarse aqub (18).

Sin embargo, Fullola rechaza esta suposición de Pericot, ya que
considera que nos encontramos ante una fase transitoria, prueba de
una evolución «in sitU», de ahí que el primer tramo (4-4.25) no deba
ser incluido en el Magdaleniense como querfa Pericot al considerar
mezclados los niveles (19).
Fue Siret, por otra parte, quien primeramente empleó el término
Parp.allense con el fm de definir el conjunto industrial caracterfstico
de este nivel (20); más tarde seria Jiménez Navarro quien lo utilizarla
con ánimo de que se difundiera y utilizara entre el mundo cientifico
(21), aunque con escaso éxito, ya que hasta el mismo Periqot se mostró sumamente reticente en su empleo y difusión.
Mientras tanto otros nombres le fueron aplicados, asf Breuillo denominó Solutrense levantino final (22); Obermaier, Capsiense Medio
(23), aunque fue la denominación de Jordá, Solútreo-Gravetiense
(24), la que tuvo más adeptos, difundiéndose rápidamente y siendo
aceptada hasta por el mismo Pericot.
Pero, con motivo del I Congreso de Historia del País Valenciano,
celebrado en Valencia en 1971, Domingo Fletcher Valls y nosotros
presentamos una moción pidiendo la aceptación del término Parpallense para el mismo, término que ambos utilizarfamos regularmente
a partir de dicho momento (25).
En 1976, Jordá y Fortea hablan ya de Solutrense evolucionado,
insinuando la posibilidad de que se le llame Parpallense (26), término

que taxativamente utiliza Fullola en 1977 y en 1979 (27), ·y encontrando ·paralelismos claros .Yevidentes entre las industrias contemp·oráneas más representativas del Midi (Salpétriére), Italia (PagUcci) y
Valencia (Parpalló), no duda en definirlo como industria propia y característica del arco mediterráneo que va desde Almena hasta la Puglia, caracterizándolo por el retorno a la idea del dorso reblijado, diversificación de tipos, «lo que desembocará en la variedad microlitica
magdaleniense», ascenso de los buriles y de un· 5/ 1O % se pasa a un
17/ 25% (28); paralelismo generalizado que le lleva a la reivindicación
del término (29) de esta manera: «el Solútreogravetiense puede transformarse incluso en Parpallen.Se. Util definidor es la punta y la hoja de
escotadura. Uso renovado del retoque abrupto en dorsos reblijados,
sustituyendo la moda del retoque plano solutrense» (30). Definitiva toma de posturas de los investigadores foráneos que llena de satisfacción a los valencianos que hemos sido pioneros en la reivindicación
del término.
Fullola data el nivel desde el15.900 hasta el13.000 a. de C., apoyado en las fechas radiocarbónicas obtenidas para el Parpalló (31) ; en
lo qu~ discrepamos dado el estado, prodedencia y vicisitudes sufridas
por las muestras, todo lo cual hemos comentado recientemente (32),
pareciéndonos especialmente anómala la del Magdaleniense Ill. Por
nuestra parte hemos propuesto su datación desde el16.000 al15.000
a. de C. como la más oportuna de acuerdo con las dataciones generales obtenidas tanto para las industrias.similares como para las anteriores y posteriores {33), en cuyo momento, por lo tanto, se debió grabar el hueso en cuestión.

VALORACION ESTILISTICA Y ARTISTICA
La obra descubierta es, paradójicamente, única por el soporte, ya
que no existe ninguna otra pieza de hueso con grabados figurativos
tan nftidos e identificables, ya que de las 434 piezas de hueso o asta
con algún grabado, «la inmensa mayoría de tales piezas presentan
únicamente lineas grabadas que no parecen formar motivo alguno y
carecen por tanto de valor documental o simbólico, teniendo sólo carácter utilitario o fin indeterminado» (34).
El arte sobre losetas calizas «sigue produciendo algunas de sus
mejores obras, pero en contraste con las losetas de gran tamafto de niveles anteriores, ahora (Parpallense) abundan1as pequeñas con dibujo de estilo movido» (35)..

Bajo nuestro punto de vista el caballo destaca por su realismo
frente al manifiesto esquematismo de las figuraciones caballares parpallenses, de tal manera que, si exceptuamos dos representaciones
del Magdaleniense IV, números 443 y 446 respectivamente, es para
nosotros la de.mejor estilo y mayor calidad artfstica, y en la que en~
contramos un mayor cuidado en la representación de ciertos detalles
anatómicos.
La cierva, por el contrario, ofrece características comunes a numerosas representaciones sobre piedra, destacando su manifiesto esquematismo, soslayándose cualquier detalle anatómico interior y representándqse precariamente los exteriores, de ahí la duda sobre su
interpretación, tal y como le ocurrió a Pericot (36) ; especialmente por
el modo de representar las orejas mediante dos lineas rectas oblicuas
divergentes o en V, la asemejan a la 130, 289 y 471 ; el tratamiento
general de la cabeza a la 195 y otras; a resaltar el tratamiento descuidado, incluso torpe y burdo diríamos, del cuello, que se interrumpe en
la arista de rotura.
A pesar de que las cifras estadísticas indican que fue durante el
«Magdaleniense la época en que se acostumbró a grabar el hueso,
mientras que en los periodos anteriores tal práctica fue muy poco frecuente» (37), la calidad de la obra supera con creces a todas las representaciones posteriores, ya que únicamente se han seftalado cinco posibles representaciones animales, y ello con fundadas dudas, creyén-

dose distinguir un posible cáprido en el Magdaleniense I, asi como algo parecido a una cabeza d.e serpiente en el mismo nivel; sobre un
punzón del Magdaleniense II una cierva poco clara y un cuadrúpedo
sumamente esquemático; otra cabeza de cabra pertenece al Magdaleniense IV, sin que se pueda tomar en consideración un ciervo casual
del Magdaleniense I.
Hasta el momento de su descubrimiento el predominio absoluto
era de los motivos geométricos, con 38 ejemplares grabados a base de
líneas en zig-zag o cruzadas sobre útiles magdalenienses, lo que hizo
af'Irmar a Pericot que «ú.nicamente se decoran las piezas de hueso y
asta cuando éstas adquieren importancia y su labor merece más atención que la del sílex, o sea en los periodos magdalenienses (38); el hueso en estudio obliga, pues, a cambiar esta af'll'lllación, o por lo menos
a matizarla.
Estilisticamente su pertenencia al Parpallense es evidente y apropiada, y aunque estad.fsticamente haya un descenso de caras de losetas calizas grabadas y pintadas durante el Parpallense, hay, por el
contrario, un aumento considerable de las representaciones zoomorfas tanto grabadas como pintadas en el momento que se utiliza el hueso como soporte, lo que resulta, en este periodo, una novedad importante (39).
Los cérvidos son los animales más representados en el Parpalló,
especialmente las hembras, pudiendo «decirse que tenemos representaciones C!e ciervas en todos los estilos o maneras que en el arte del
Parpalló aparecen y en todos los niveles de esta cueva» (40), encontrándose sus mejores imágenes en el Solutrense» (41).
El caballo no se encuentra representado con tanta frecuencia como los cérvidos, sin que se adviertan diferencias numéricas o estillsticas entre el Magdaleniense o el Premagdaleniense, habiendo en ambas etapas excelentes dibujos al lado de esbozos de un primitivismo
ingénuo o inhábil y torpe. A pesar de todo Pericot también señala como en las «capas superiores se hallan las siluetas más f'Inas y hábiles,
con una fuerza expresiva que el artista clásico no superó, aún contando con medios más perfectos» (42).

En el Artb Paleolitico Cantábrico la cierva se representa 17 veces,
siendo tema especialmente tratado en el ciclo Solútreo-magdaleniense
según Barandiarán (43), co~inando con el caballo (44)! Los caballos
aparecen en 22 objetos diferentes, representándose en 28 ocasiones;
aunque el mayor número de representaciones corresponde al Magdaleniense superior y. final (45). ·
La idea de que las obras del arte mueble, sobre plaquetas, losetas,
hueso, etc., eran los modelos transportables· en los que se inspirabJl o
guiaba er artista paleolitico para la realización de las obras parietales,
ha sido de'rmitivamente relegada y abandonada; sin embargo, por sus
mayores y mejores posibilida~es de. datación absoluta, han sido guia
para la ordenación estilis~co-cronológica del Arte parietal Hispanoaquitano (el mal llamado Franco-Cantábrico), a pes.ar de las objecione·s puestas al método por los evidentes «desfases temporales y faltas
de correspondencia en las .cartas de distribución geográfica de las
manifestaciones parietales y ·muebles» (46), puesto que «los casos de
obras realmenté iguales .en~ el arte mueble y el parietal son contadisimos, acaso no sea la misma 1~ finalidad de uno y otro arte, ni los
mismos los autores de ambas obras», señ.alándose da mayor homogeneidad y simplicismo del arte mueble (obra de un solo individuo, ejecutada en un solo momento) sobre el parietal» (47).
~i atendemos a la estructuración del Arte Hispano-Aquitano de
Leroi-Gourhan nuestrá obra artistica encajaría perfectamente dentro
del Estilo m de su l?erfodo Arcaico, cuando todavia subsiste la curva
cérvico-dorsal, aunqúe muy atenu~da, con crineras más perfectas,
desarrollándose durante el Solu~rise y Magdaleniense I y II (48). Sin
embargo, se advierten ciertas diferencias que marcan -el camino a seguir para la separación técnica, estilistica y temática del Arte Atlántico y del Mediterráneo durante el Paleolítico, así vemos como das pequeñ.as placas de hueso sólo son frecuentes a partir del Magdaleniense medio» (49); mientras que los cérvidos son los menos representados, no así el caballo, ·que junto al bisonte es el segundo más representado entre todos los temas .zoomorfos JSO).

EL ARTE PARPALLENSE
El título que hemos dado a este trabajo es lo suficientemente
explicito para manifestar nuestra ~oma de postura acerca de la cuestión siempre esbozada y nunca planteada y discutida acerca de las diferencias y separación entre las dos tendencias artísticas, o mejor entre los dos artes peninsulares y extrapeninsulares que se desarrollan
durante el Paleolftico Superior, el Hispano-Aquitano y el Mediterráneo Oc.cidental o Arte Parpallense.
· Breuil, en 1962, no consideraba viable ;ni prudente la asociación
coJl).parativa entre el ~e del Parpalló y el Hispano-aquitano (51).
Fue, sin embargo, Graziosi quien llegó mucho más lejos, y ya desde 1933 acertó a ver las similitudes y paralelos de lo mediterráneo
(52), creando más tarde su Provincia Mediterránea (53), sobre lo que
hemos hablado exten~amente en fecha reciente (54), tratando ya del
Arte Parpallonés como arte djferenciado (55), idea que, en parte, también aceptó Pericot (56).
La justificación del término es obvia. La prelación del Parpalló sobre la totalidad, o por lo menos la mayor parte, de los yacimientos conocidos con muestras de este arte, y sobre todo, la abrumadora cantidad de piezas halladas en Parpalló, sin posibilidad comparativa, obligan a la utilización y aceptación del término derivado del nombre de
la cueva valenciana, de ahí lo de Arte Parpallense.
Aunque no hay posibilidad material para desarrollar y ampliar el
tema, nos limitarep¡os a indicar, a la espera de ocasión más propicia,
que cada vez y con mayor intensidad y frecuencia se señalan las dife-

rencias entre ambos, y así Beltrán no considera marginal o provincial
lo descubierto recientemente en Colungo (57), mientras que los nuevos grabados descubiertos en el Riparo Tagliente, de tema lineal,
geométrico y figurativo, co~binan rasgos Hispano-aquit~os y mediterráneos al decir del autor (58).
Las ideas más tajantes sobre el particular, sin embargo, han sido
formuladas por J. Fortea Pérez, para quien «A partir del Solutrense
Medio hay una evidente personalización del Mediterráneo español
con elementos progresivos en el Pleno, y diferenciadores y progresivos en el evolucionado que configuran un ciclo artístico coherente,
con sentido· estilístico propio y lejano al atlántico; sólo queda lo conceptual» (59); habiendo señalado ya en páginas anteriores como «los
ideomorfos rectangulares de Parpalló nos sirven para repetir otra vez
que el Arte Mediterráneo ·español es atlántico en lo conceptual y mediterráneo en lo estilístico)) (60).
Acerca de estos temas también P. Casado habla de fondo común,
aunque apuntando la existencia de diferencias sensibles entre ambos,
señalando en el Parpallense una mayor tendencia hacia lo esquemático, que es antiguo por otra parte (61).
En el futuro inmediato creemos que habrá que seguir esta línea y
estudiar el Arte Parpallense con plena autonomía y no en sentido sucursalista del Hispano-aquitano como se ha venido realizando hasta
el momento, siendo este breve apunte una primera llamada de atención sobre el problema.

PARPALLENSE
El Arte del Parpalló o ARTE PARPALLENSE es lo suficientemente
conocido a escala mundial, así como el papel fundamental que ha representado en el mejor conocimiento y estructuración del arte paleolítico europeo, para que una nueva obra venga a tener especial signíficación o pueda introducir modificaciones esenciales o siquiera de matiz en los esquemas artísticos y evolutivos establecidos. Sin embargo,
la descubierta adquiere singular significación por la naturaleza del
soporte sobre el que se encuentra, de ahí que juzguemos oportuno dedicarle primordial atención, lo que motiva el presente trabajo.
CARACTERISTICAS Y HALLAZGO
El soporte de la nueva obra conocida de arte mueble procedente
del Parpalló (fig. 1), es una gran caña de hueso largo, posiblemente de
caballo, de 19 cm. de longitud, 3.5 cm. de anchura máxima y 1.8 cm.
de espesor en la parte proximal de la apófisis; presentando buena
conservación y gran solidez por intensa mineralización; con pátina
marrón oscura.
Se halló a una profundidad entre 4 y 4.50 m. (fig. 2), siendo recogido, pues, entre los días 4 y 6 de junio de 1930, cuando 1~ dirección
de los trabl:tios de excavación que realizaba el S.I.P. de la Diputación
de Valencia en la cueva ·gandiense era compartida yor Luis Pericot,
Mariano Jornet y Gonzalo Viñes.
A causa de que se trata de un gran fragmento de hueso largo, sin
preparación aparente a pesar de que se observa cierto pulido de algunas aristas, pasó desapercibido a los excavadores confundido con los

otros restos de fauna, entre otras razones por la capa de .Qarro y tierra
que lo debía cubrir, enmascarando, por lo tanto, las incisiones.
Precisamente la capa donde apareció; especialmente «la parte occidental, estaba lleria de los restos óseos de los animales consumidos,
formando un inmenso osario»,· según nos relata Pericot (1), y como un
hueso más fue recogido y guardado en los almacenes del S.I.P:, donde
permanecía junto a otros muchos huelfos dentro de un gran cajón de
madera.
En 1972, el Dr. I. Davidson, arqueólogo-paleontólogo inglés, estudiaba la fauna del Parpalló y al examinar la del cajóri en cuestión
acertó a distinguir las incisiones figuradas, entregando la pieza a la
dirección del S.I.P., que de inmediato valoró su extraordinaria importancia, quedando expuesta en las vitrinas de su Museo, dándose noticia gráfica en el libro «Museo de Prehistoria... » (Valencia, 1974, ·
pág. 53.)
LAS FIGURACIONQS
La parte externa del hueso, sensiblemente incurvada, contiene
dos figuras enfr~ntadas (fig. 3 y láminas I a IV), la de la izquierda corresponde a un caballo y la de la derecha a un cérvido.
Ambas se han ejecutado mediante la técnica de la incisión, aplicada de dos maneras diferentes, parte de la crinera, oreja, cara, boca,
barba y belfos del caballo, así como de la cabeza y cuello del cérvido
se han ejecutado con incisión simple profunda de sección en uve; el
resto, en ambas figuras, por el contrario, se ha ejecutado mediante incisión muy somera, aunque ancha en relación con su poca profundidad, observándose wi doble surco paralelo que podría confundirse
con el «trazo repe'tido» descrito por Barandiarán (2), pero, al parecer,
se trata más bien de la doble huella de los extremos de la arista del
buril empleado, según nuestro criterio.

El caballo, que mira a la derecha, se grabó con trazo firme y suave, figurándose únicamente la cabeza,' cuello, crinera, cruz, parte del
dorso, pecho y parte del vientre, no representándose, por lo tanto, ni

la mitad trasera del mismo ni las extremidades (fig. 3 y láminas I a
ill). La crinera destaca perfectamente, cayendo abruptamente sobre
la frente (lám. ill), estando formada por dos lineas paralelas rellenas
de trazos oblicuos que sobrepasan su límite superior, lo que generalmente es interpretado como signo de hirsutismo (3). Solamente se representa una de las ·orejas mediante linea oblicua simple, pudiendo
confundirse la otra con la linea terminal de la crinera paralela a la
anterior.
La frente y la cara del mismo caball~ son sensiblemente convexas; el ojo se ha representado mediante una incisión corta oblicua,
cortada por otr~ transversal, quedando en el cruce una pequeña
oquedad; el hocico sufrió rectificación, acortándolo, lo que·parece ser
debido a que se alargó y levantó excesivamente el extremo del mismo,
lo que obligó a borrar, raspándolo, el ollar o narices iniciales, nítidamente representadas en el nuevo trazado. Por el contrario, la boca,
los belfos, la barba y el barboquejo no aparecen entre la confusión de
líneas, algunas de las cuales, por su oblicuidad, parecen querer representar, más bien, los pelos de la barba, y otra horizontal no guarda
posición en relación con las otras.
Sin emb~go, las fauces si quedan bien representadas, continuándose la figura a partir de aqui por el cuello, pecho y, quizá, parte del
vientre, donde ya acaba, siendo, en este último tramo descrito donde
una serie de numerosas incisiones cortas oblicuas rellenan toda la mitad inferior del cuello, pudiendo representar el abundante pelo que
poseen en esta parte determinadas especies (faballares, o bien ser un
recurso artístico en relación con el llamado claroscuro, utilizado para
dar relieve y volumen a la figura, inclinándonos nosotros por la primera opción. De las extremidades y de la parte trasera no hay ningún
detalle.
En general el caballo se representa de forma alargada en el sentido del soporte, y las partes señaladas son exactamente las que el autor debió querer plasmar, según la tendencia indicada por Pericot en
Parpalló: «Rarísima vez el animal aparece entero, a no ser en dibujos
de pequeño tamalio. En la mayoría de los casos vemos sólo la parte de
cabeza y cuello del caballo» (4). En la postura representada se podrla
intentar ver al caballo en actitud de salto, o bien en la posición tensa
que adoptan post-mortero, lo cual, sin dejar de ser viable, es excesiva·
mente subjetivo.

Se encuentra atravesado por numerosas lineas incisas oblicuas,
de incisión ancha y poco profunda, que nada tienen que ver con el tema de los trazos pareados (5) (tampoco las numerosas incisiones señaladas en el vientre), sin que hayamos encontrado claros elementos
comparativos en otras representaciones lineales (6); en todo caso no
están dispuestas al azar, una de ellas cruza la cara por la parte más
convexa de la misma y modela las fauces, la siguiente arranca del
niismo ojo"' otra, a continuación, parece iniciarse en la base d& la oreja
separada de la crinera; otras lineas incisas interiores parecen querer
representar detalles del caballo o ser intentos fallidos del dibujo.
Es imposible calcular la superficie o realizar el diagrama zoométrico de esta figura caballar, tal y como propone Madariaga (7), ya
que lo único que podemos calcular es la longitud de la cabeza, 20
mm.; anchura corporal, una cabeza y dos partes y media; longitud del
cuello, 1 cabeza y dos partes y media; anchura del cuello, 7 partes y
media, y ello con reservas dada la deformación de la figura. Aparte
del cuello corto, lo más destacable es la convexidad de la cara y el hirsutismo de la crinera, que resalta notablemente.
Si atendemos a la convexidad del perfil de la cara, detalle significativo, estudiado especialmente por Ruy d' Andrade desde otro .ángulo
(8), y tenemos en cuenta el Trígamo Signaléptico de Baron, reproducido por Madariaga (9), nos encontraríamos ante un caballo longilineo e
hipermétrico; convexidad que, también según Madariaga (10), secorresponde con caras alargadas, nuca estrecha, ojos oblicuos y pequeños, ort-jas juntas, cuello convexo, cruz elevada, dorso y región del ri-

ñón convexos, grupa inclinada y cola de inserción beja metida entre
los isquiones. En cuyo caso se trataría de su Morfotipo IV de la clasificación de los caballos de la Re~ón Cantábrica, con hábita~ en valles y
regiones costeras, ricas en pastos.
No es nuestro propósito, ni mucho menos, determinar la raza del
caballo aqui representado, lo que consideramos ciertamente imposible, aunque se han realizado intentos (11) ampliamente criticQdos
(12), afirmándose, incluso, runa no muy compleja diferenciación dentro de la especie caballar» (13); pero, siend·o la clasificación binaria,
Tarpán o Przewalsky, la más aceptada actualmente, seria interesante
poder definir la pertenencia de nuestro caballo a cualquiera de ambas.
La crinera enhiesta es rasgo propio del Morfotipo ir de Madariaga, lo cual abogaría por el Przewalsky, aunque entonces se trataría de
un caballo mediollneo que no encejarfa con su perfil convexo según lo
expuesto. Lión Valderrábano señala, no obstante, una población de
caballos brevillneos en el Solutrense, y en el Magdaleniense Inicial
Longillneos (14), es decir runa población caballar de tipo tarpánico en
Gravetiense-Solutrense Inicial, sobre la cual parece extenderse una
muy numerosá capa de caballos de tipo oriental, dolicocéfalos y de
formas más alargadas, eñ algún momento del interestadio de Lasca\ID (15), este último necesariamente tendría que ser el Frzewalsky, que
es por el que nos inclinamos nosotros.
CBRVIDO
Enfrentada al caballo y por lo tanto en la parte derecha, junto a la
apófisis, se encuentra una diminuta figura, tanto que pasó desapercibida en los primeros momentos, no ya sólo por su peque:Jiez y lo ténue
de su grabado, sino también por el estilo esquemático e incluso torpe
de algunos de sus trazos (fig. 3 y lám. IV), de tal manera que llegamos
a dudar sobre si se trataba de un clprido o un cérvido, inclinándonos
por lo últim!J al examinar con detalle el morro y la cornamenta, ya
que figuras similares del Parpalló (16) se han considerado así.

Pai'a su representación se hizo uso de dos microfiSuras naturales
situadas pró¡dmas y convergentes, aprovechándose para figurar la
nuca, cara, p.a rte del.morro y ·la mandíbula, completándose el resto
mediante incisión .simple de sección en uve, o ancha y somera, delimitándose asi el fino morro y el cuello que dobla violentamente y se
al~ga con exageración; sobre la nuca dos lineas rectas incisas divergentes representan las orejas, por lo que hay que considerarla como
una cierva. Ningún otro detalle anatómico hemos podido distinguir,
puesto que lo descritq es todo lo representado.
También, como el caballo, se encuentra atravesado por lineas incisas -en aparente desorden, una de ellas arranca desde la oreja izquierda, corta el morro de .la misma y se pierde debfijo del hocico del
caballo; otras dos incisiones convergentes oblicuas descienden paralelas al cuerno ~erecho para juntarse en el inicio de la parte inferior
· del cuello, alli se cruzan y siguen dirección divergente, uniéndose la
izquierda con la linea oblicua que cruzaba el morro, siguiendo, esta
última, el recorrido de una vieja fisura.
Por último, queremos señalar que entre el morro de la cabra y la
cabeza del caballo hay una serie de numerosas y cortas incisiones en
anárquica disposición al parecer, de imposible interpretación.
POSICION ESTRATIGRAFICA Y CRONOLOGICA
Ya hemos indicado como el hueso grabado se encontró entre 4 y
4.50 m. de profundidad, bien en la capa 16 (4-4.25 m.), bien en la 17
(4.25-4.50 m.), en el nivel que Pericot denominó primeramente
Solútreo-Auriñaciense final, cuando el «apogeo de la técnica solutrense decaía después de los 4.75 m., empezando entonces el apogeo de la
punta de muesca de tradición auriñaciense. El predominio de ésta se
hace más evidente a partir de los 4.5 metros», según explica el mismo
Pericot (17); sin embargo, añade en la misma página: «Pero estamos en
un mmnento de transición entre dos culttn'as de caracteres radicalmente
opuestos, y por ello, faltando capas estériles, forzosamente ha de producirse alguna confusión y entrecruce. Especialmente en ·la capa de 4
a 4.25· metros aparecen piezas que corresponden al nivel superior,
· que hacemos empezar alrededor de los cuatro metros, de la misma
manera que de los 3.75 a los 4 metros nos encontraremos c.o n piezas,
puntas de muesca, por ejemplo, que deben colocarse aqub (18).

Sin embargo, Fullola rechaza esta suposición de Pericot, ya que
considera que nos encontramos ante una fase transitoria, prueba de
una evolución «in sitU», de ahí que el primer tramo (4-4.25) no deba
ser incluido en el Magdaleniense como querfa Pericot al considerar
mezclados los niveles (19).
Fue Siret, por otra parte, quien primeramente empleó el término
Parp.allense con el fm de definir el conjunto industrial caracterfstico
de este nivel (20); más tarde seria Jiménez Navarro quien lo utilizarla
con ánimo de que se difundiera y utilizara entre el mundo cientifico
(21), aunque con escaso éxito, ya que hasta el mismo Periqot se mostró sumamente reticente en su empleo y difusión.
Mientras tanto otros nombres le fueron aplicados, asf Breuillo denominó Solutrense levantino final (22); Obermaier, Capsiense Medio
(23), aunque fue la denominación de Jordá, Solútreo-Gravetiense
(24), la que tuvo más adeptos, difundiéndose rápidamente y siendo
aceptada hasta por el mismo Pericot.
Pero, con motivo del I Congreso de Historia del País Valenciano,
celebrado en Valencia en 1971, Domingo Fletcher Valls y nosotros
presentamos una moción pidiendo la aceptación del término Parpallense para el mismo, término que ambos utilizarfamos regularmente
a partir de dicho momento (25).
En 1976, Jordá y Fortea hablan ya de Solutrense evolucionado,
insinuando la posibilidad de que se le llame Parpallense (26), término

que taxativamente utiliza Fullola en 1977 y en 1979 (27), ·y encontrando ·paralelismos claros .Yevidentes entre las industrias contemp·oráneas más representativas del Midi (Salpétriére), Italia (PagUcci) y
Valencia (Parpalló), no duda en definirlo como industria propia y característica del arco mediterráneo que va desde Almena hasta la Puglia, caracterizándolo por el retorno a la idea del dorso reblijado, diversificación de tipos, «lo que desembocará en la variedad microlitica
magdaleniense», ascenso de los buriles y de un· 5/ 1O % se pasa a un
17/ 25% (28); paralelismo generalizado que le lleva a la reivindicación
del término (29) de esta manera: «el Solútreogravetiense puede transformarse incluso en Parpallen.Se. Util definidor es la punta y la hoja de
escotadura. Uso renovado del retoque abrupto en dorsos reblijados,
sustituyendo la moda del retoque plano solutrense» (30). Definitiva toma de posturas de los investigadores foráneos que llena de satisfacción a los valencianos que hemos sido pioneros en la reivindicación
del término.
Fullola data el nivel desde el15.900 hasta el13.000 a. de C., apoyado en las fechas radiocarbónicas obtenidas para el Parpalló (31) ; en
lo qu~ discrepamos dado el estado, prodedencia y vicisitudes sufridas
por las muestras, todo lo cual hemos comentado recientemente (32),
pareciéndonos especialmente anómala la del Magdaleniense Ill. Por
nuestra parte hemos propuesto su datación desde el16.000 al15.000
a. de C. como la más oportuna de acuerdo con las dataciones generales obtenidas tanto para las industrias.similares como para las anteriores y posteriores {33), en cuyo momento, por lo tanto, se debió grabar el hueso en cuestión.

VALORACION ESTILISTICA Y ARTISTICA
La obra descubierta es, paradójicamente, única por el soporte, ya
que no existe ninguna otra pieza de hueso con grabados figurativos
tan nftidos e identificables, ya que de las 434 piezas de hueso o asta
con algún grabado, «la inmensa mayoría de tales piezas presentan
únicamente lineas grabadas que no parecen formar motivo alguno y
carecen por tanto de valor documental o simbólico, teniendo sólo carácter utilitario o fin indeterminado» (34).
El arte sobre losetas calizas «sigue produciendo algunas de sus
mejores obras, pero en contraste con las losetas de gran tamafto de niveles anteriores, ahora (Parpallense) abundan1as pequeñas con dibujo de estilo movido» (35)..
·
Bajo nuestro punto de vista el caballo destaca por su realismo
frente al manifiesto esquematismo de las figuraciones caballares parpallenses, de tal manera que, si exceptuamos dos representaciones
del Magdaleniense IV, números 443 y 446 respectivamente, es para
nosotros la de.mejor estilo y mayor calidad artfstica, y en la que en~
contramos un mayor cuidado en la representación de ciertos detalles
anatómicos.
La cierva, por el contrario, ofrece características comunes a numerosas representaciones sobre piedra, destacando su manifiesto esquematismo, soslayándose cualquier detalle anatómico interior y representándqse precariamente los exteriores, de ahí la duda sobre su
interpretación, tal y como le ocurrió a Pericot (36) ; especialmente por
el modo de representar las orejas mediante dos lineas rectas oblicuas
divergentes o en V, la asemejan a la 130, 289 y 471 ; el tratamiento
general de la cabeza a la 195 y otras; a resaltar el tratamiento descuidado, incluso torpe y burdo diríamos, del cuello, que se interrumpe en
la arista de rotura.
A pesar de que las cifras estadísticas indican que fue durante el
«Magdaleniense la época en que se acostumbró a grabar el hueso,
mientras que en los periodos anteriores tal práctica fue muy poco frecuente» (37), la calidad de la obra supera con creces a todas las representaciones posteriores, ya que únicamente se han seftalado cinco posibles representaciones animales, y ello con fundadas dudas, creyén-

dose distinguir un posible cáprido en el Magdaleniense I, asi como algo parecido a una cabeza d.e serpiente en el mismo nivel; sobre un
punzón del Magdaleniense II una cierva poco clara y un cuadrúpedo
sumamente esquemático; otra cabeza de cabra pertenece al Magdaleniense IV, sin que se pueda tomar en consideración un ciervo casual
del Magdaleniense I.
Hasta el momento de su descubrimiento el predominio absoluto
era de los motivos geométricos, con 38 ejemplares grabados a base de
líneas en zig-zag o cruzadas sobre útiles magdalenienses, lo que hizo
af'Irmar a Pericot que «ú.nicamente se decoran las piezas de hueso y
asta cuando éstas adquieren importancia y su labor merece más atención que la del sílex, o sea en los periodos magdalenienses (38); el hueso en estudio obliga, pues, a cambiar esta af'll'lllación, o por lo menos
a matizarla.
Estilisticamente su pertenencia al Parpallense es evidente y apropiada, y aunque estad.fsticamente haya un descenso de caras de losetas calizas grabadas y pintadas durante el Parpallense, hay, por el
contrario, un aumento considerable de las representaciones zoomorfas tanto grabadas como pintadas en el momento que se utiliza el hueso como soporte, lo que resulta, en este periodo, una novedad importante (39).
Los cérvidos son los animales más representados en el Parpalló,
especialmente las hembras, pudiendo «decirse que tenemos representaciones C!e ciervas en todos los estilos o maneras que en el arte del
Parpalló aparecen y en todos los niveles de esta cueva» (40), encontrándose sus mejores imágenes en el Solutrense» (41).
El caballo no se encuentra representado con tanta frecuencia como los cérvidos, sin que se adviertan diferencias numéricas o estillsticas entre el Magdaleniense o el Premagdaleniense, habiendo en ambas etapas excelentes dibujos al lado de esbozos de un primitivismo
ingénuo o inhábil y torpe. A pesar de todo Pericot también señala como en las «capas superiores se hallan las siluetas más f'Inas y hábiles,
con una fuerza expresiva que el artista clásico no superó, aún contando con medios más perfectos» (42).

En el Artb Paleolitico Cantábrico la cierva se representa 17 veces,
siendo tema especialmente tratado en el ciclo Solútreo-magdaleniense
según Barandiarán (43), co~inando con el caballo (44)! Los caballos
aparecen en 22 objetos diferentes, representándose en 28 ocasiones;
aunque el mayor número de representaciones corresponde al Magdaleniense superior y. final (45). ·
La idea de que las obras del arte mueble, sobre plaquetas, losetas,
hueso, etc., eran los modelos transportables· en los que se inspirabJl o
guiaba er artista paleolitico para la realización de las obras parietales,
ha sido de'rmitivamente relegada y abandonada; sin embargo, por sus
mayores y mejores posibilida~es de. datación absoluta, han sido guia
para la ordenación estilis~co-cronológica del Arte parietal Hispanoaquitano (el mal llamado Franco-Cantábrico), a pes.ar de las objecione·s puestas al método por los evidentes «desfases temporales y faltas
de correspondencia en las .cartas de distribución geográfica de las
manifestaciones parietales y ·muebles» (46), puesto que «los casos de
obras realmenté iguales .en~ el arte mueble y el parietal son contadisimos, acaso no sea la misma 1~ finalidad de uno y otro arte, ni los
mismos los autores de ambas obras», señ.alándose da mayor homogeneidad y simplicismo del arte mueble (obra de un solo individuo, ejecutada en un solo momento) sobre el parietal» (47).
~i atendemos a la estructuración del Arte Hispano-Aquitano de
Leroi-Gourhan nuestrá obra artistica encajaría perfectamente dentro
del Estilo m de su l?erfodo Arcaico, cuando todavia subsiste la curva
cérvico-dorsal, aunqúe muy atenu~da, con crineras más perfectas,
desarrollándose durante el Solu~rise y Magdaleniense I y II (48). Sin
embargo, se advierten ciertas diferencias que marcan -el camino a seguir para la separación técnica, estilistica y temática del Arte Atlántico y del Mediterráneo durante el Paleolítico, así vemos como das pequeñ.as placas de hueso sólo son frecuentes a partir del Magdaleniense medio» (49); mientras que los cérvidos son los menos representados, no así el caballo, ·que junto al bisonte es el segundo más representado entre todos los temas .zoomorfos JSO).

EL ARTE PARPALLENSE
El título que hemos dado a este trabajo es lo suficientemente
explicito para manifestar nuestra ~oma de postura acerca de la cuestión siempre esbozada y nunca planteada y discutida acerca de las diferencias y separación entre las dos tendencias artísticas, o mejor entre los dos artes peninsulares y extrapeninsulares que se desarrollan
durante el Paleolftico Superior, el Hispano-Aquitano y el Mediterráneo Oc.cidental o Arte Parpallense.
· Breuil, en 1962, no consideraba viable ;ni prudente la asociación
coJl).parativa entre el ~e del Parpalló y el Hispano-aquitano (51).
Fue, sin embargo, Graziosi quien llegó mucho más lejos, y ya desde 1933 acertó a ver las similitudes y paralelos de lo mediterráneo
(52), creando más tarde su Provincia Mediterránea (53), sobre lo que
hemos hablado exten~amente en fecha reciente (54), tratando ya del
Arte Parpallonés como arte djferenciado (55), idea que, en parte, también aceptó Pericot (56).
La justificación del término es obvia. La prelación del Parpalló sobre la totalidad, o por lo menos la mayor parte, de los yacimientos conocidos con muestras de este arte, y sobre todo, la abrumadora cantidad de piezas halladas en Parpalló, sin posibilidad comparativa, obligan a la utilización y aceptación del término derivado del nombre de
la cueva valenciana, de ahí lo de Arte Parpallense.
Aunque no hay posibilidad material para desarrollar y ampliar el
tema, nos limitarep¡os a indicar, a la espera de ocasión más propicia,
que cada vez y con mayor intensidad y frecuencia se señalan las dife-

rencias entre ambos, y así Beltrán no considera marginal o provincial
lo descubierto recientemente en Colungo (57), mientras que los nuevos grabados descubiertos en el Riparo Tagliente, de tema lineal,
geométrico y figurativo, co~binan rasgos Hispano-aquit~os y mediterráneos al decir del autor (58).
Las ideas más tajantes sobre el particular, sin embargo, han sido
formuladas por J. Fortea Pérez, para quien «A partir del Solutrense
Medio hay una evidente personalización del Mediterráneo español
con elementos progresivos en el Pleno, y diferenciadores y progresivos en el evolucionado que configuran un ciclo artístico coherente,
con sentido· estilístico propio y lejano al atlántico; sólo queda lo conceptual» (59); habiendo señalado ya en páginas anteriores como «los
ideomorfos rectangulares de Parpalló nos sirven para repetir otra vez
que el Arte Mediterráneo ·español es atlántico en lo conceptual y mediterráneo en lo estilístico)) (60).
Acerca de estos temas también P. Casado habla de fondo común,
aunque apuntando la existencia de diferencias sensibles entre ambos,
señalando en el Parpallense una mayor tendencia hacia lo esquemático, que es antiguo por otra parte (61).
En el futuro inmediato creemos que habrá que seguir esta línea y
estudiar el Arte Parpallense con plena autonomía y no en sentido sucursalista del Hispano-aquitano como se ha venido realizando hasta
el momento, siendo este breve apunte una primera llamada de atención sobre el problema.
