crossroads between the memories of the Roman Empire,
the arrival of the Germanic tribes, and the culture of the
Eastern world. The study of the Visigoths is essential to an
understanding of the Muslim world and the feudal times
that followed them.
In the modern era, the image of the Visigoths has evolved
with the politics of the times. During the postwar period,
Spanish children learnt the list of the 33 Gothic kings at
school: the Franco regime saw the Visigothic monarchy as a
precursor of its motto Una, Grande y Libre, which proclaimed
Spain to be “United, Great and Free”. But the Visigoths
#")) #/,* $/ " ȇ"/ 1%" !& 11,/0%&-Ѹ +! 1%"&/ "/ 40
largely dismissed as an interlude of ignorance and decline.

The memory of the Visigothic kings, less barbaric than
they are sometimes depicted, faded from view … until
archaeological excavations gradually began to reinstate
them. València and its surrounding area, especially
Riba-roja de Túria, bear witness to a period with its own
personality. Deposits have been discovered at many
sites: Casals del Mas de Sabater (Morella), Horta Vella
(Bétera), València la Vella and Pla de Nadal (Riba-roja de
Túria), the cathedral ensemble and the circus of Valentia,
Senda de l’Horteta (Alcàsser), Punta de l’Illa and Portus
Sucronensis (Cullera), Monastil (Elda), Allon (Vila Joiosa),
Ilici (Elx), Portus Ilicitanus (Santa Pola) and others.
València and the lands around it are home to some of the

discovered and shared.
